Extremely Rare Fr. 342--The Second Finest Known

Fr. 342 $100 1880 Silver Certificate Choice Extremely Fine. An extremely rare note, with a total census of about a dozen pieces, three of which are permanently impounded. The only known Uncirculated note is ex-Amon Carter, and it sold in December of 2000 for $198,000. Below that, there are two XF's, this being one of those. We've not handled this piece before, and Jim O'Neal acquired it at Lyn Knight's June 2001 Sale for $48,400. It's a truly beautiful piece with excellent centering, bright colors, and strong eye-appeal. Notes of this quality only reach the market when major holdings are sold, and any collector hoping to acquire a high-grade Fr. 342 should not let this opportunity slip through his fingers. In our forty sales, we've sold only five examples, four of which were either low-grade or problem-pieces. We would expect this note to easily exceed its last sale price.
