Charming Fr. 2 Ex-Amon Carter
Fr. 2 $5 1861 Demand Note PCGS Banknote Choice VF 35
Details. This Philadelphia example has an illustrious provenance as it was once owned by Amon Carter and was plated in early editions of Gene Hessler's The Comprehensive Catalog of U.S. Paper Money. We have offered it before; the first time was as part of the Jim O'Neal Collection in May, 2005. We would like to point out that the margins are incredible for the type, the colors are absolutely perfect, and the note has dark signatures. Also, this $5 was lightly folded into eighths with three vertical and one center horizontal fold giving it the impression of a higher grade at first glance. Minor restorations are mentioned on the back label. There is an insignificant closed pinhole near the upper right corner that only unveils itself when the note is "candled" before a light source. Overall, it is a great example of this undervalued design.
Estimate: $8,000 - up.
