Fr. 146* $20 1880 Legal Tender PCGS Very Fine 25.In 2006, this replacement note made in appearance as part of the Large Size Star Note Collection of Richard Merlau, where it realized more than $14,000. It was described, "This extremely rare star is one of the crown jewels of the Merlau collection. It is one of four Fr. 146 stars known, one of which is ensconced in the ANA Museum, and clearly no longer available to collectors. The other three have long been closely held, with no appearances of any kind at public sale since one was offered in our January 1992 FUN auction. Few except the very rarest of type notes see fourteen years go by between offerings, but this is indeed the case here." When we resold this note as part of the Greensboro Collection in January of 2013, an even stronger price of $17,625 prevailed. A similar realization today should be no problem, with time proving again how rare this piece really is.
