    Fr. 1217 $500 1922 Gold Certificate Choice Very Fine. Since this note last appeared on the market in the Bowers & Ruddy 1978 ANA sale (where it sold for $1,300), grading standards have obviously evolved, since this note is there listed (and is listed in Gengerke's census) as a Fine. We have no hesitation with our interpretation of the note's grade classification, as it is bright, crisp, and has no overly distracting folds. In addition to its technical merit, the colors are bright and bold and the overall aesthetic appeal is outstanding. Only about 50 examples from the original printing of just 84,000 pieces are known to have survived, and this example easily ranks in the top half of those that we have seen. The apparent discrepancy in grading semantics between our listing and that of the census is likely to be irrelevant anyway, as the market for these scarce high denomination Gold notes should support a realized price in excess of. . .
