Fr. 1059 Tied For the Finest of Only Four Known Examples
Fr. 1059 $50 1914 Federal Reserve Note PMG Choice Very Fine 35.When we last sold this note as part of Tom Flynn's magnificent collection in April 2008, it was one of only three known examples. Since that time, one more has appeared on the market. It has also been graded by PMG as a VF 35, making this piece now tied for finest known. Our Flynn description was, "An extremely rare Minneapolis Fed Fifty, with a total census of only three examples. This note was acquired by Tom in a 2002 Bowers sale, and hence is one of the three on the census. PMG has graded this note and a VF 20. PCGS has yet to grade a Fr. 1059. Both Track & Price and the grading service pop report indicate this piece to be the finest known of the trio reported. When Tom acquired this note in November of 2002, it realized $3,220. On a far more sophisticated market for significantly rare Federal Reserve Notes, it should do far better tonight. A 'Small Tear,' which is wholly in the blank margin, that is mentioned for the sake of accuracy by the grading service, should not affect the price realized much." In the Flynn auction, this note hammered for $13,000, a number that could be approached this evening.
