Description

Spectacular Gem 65PPQ Serial Number One San Francisco $5 Red Seal

Fr. 843a $5 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.
We now move to the "Main Event," the unprecedented offering of a complete set of serial number 1 1914 Red Seals from the San Francisco Federal Reserve district. The census lists only thirteen San Francisco $5 Red Seals in all grades combined, with the only two low number specimens, L99A and L100A, ensconced in the National Numismatic Collection in the Smithsonian Institution, having been part of the donation from the Chase Manhattan Bank numismatic holdings. Of the remaining eleven pieces, one is AU, 2 are VF, and the others are all low grade. This PCGS graded Gem New 65PPQ example would be a spectacular note even if it was not a number 1 specimen. As a number 1 note, it goes beyond the spectacular and into the realm of irreplaceable. We will be conservative in our estimate here, but after the hammer falls this evening, all the money in the world could not obtain a number 1 $5 1914 Red Seal in this state of preservation.
