    One of Three Available to Collectors

    Fr. 1133-J $1,000 1918 Federal Reserve Note PMG Choice Fine 15.
    Just over five years ago, this piece graced the pages of one of our FUN Signature Auction catalogs. It sold for more than $40,000 with the following description: "This Kansas City District $1000 is one of only four examples known with just three available to collectors, as one is held by the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago. PMG has commented on restoration which looks to be minor as this note has great eye appeal. A wonderful opportunity for the high denomination collector." The overall appearance is commensurate of what we have seen of many third party graded Very Fines. At least one census now records five known examples. The listing is erroneous as the newly recorded serial number is well outside of the range of the serial numbers possible. Just 4,400 Kansas City Large Size Federal Reserve $1000s were printed, with this note very near the end of the run with a serial number of J4319A.
