Description

Serial Number One $50 San Francisco Red Seal Federal Reserve Note

Fr. 1023a $50 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note PCGS Choice New 63PPQ.
One of three serial number 1 $50 Red Seals known to exist, with the Chicago district example permanently off the market in the hands of the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank's holdings. The number 1 $50 Red Seal from the Philadelphia district is also reported, with that piece in public hands, although it has not been available at public sale since its last appearance in 2004. Any Fr. 1023a, even a non-number 1, would be a significant rarity, as the census stands at only three pieces, with one of that trio reposing in the vaults of the Smithsonian Institution. The other two have long been off the market, with one grading Very Fine, making its last appearance as part of the Brookdale sale in 1979 and the other, which grades Very Fine-Extremely Fine, last appearing on a 1989 fixed price list. Bright, brilliantly colored and exceptionally well embossed, a serial number 1 wonder note in all respects.
