Hand-Signed Fr. 789 $5 FRBN Scarcity
Fr. 789 $5 1915 Federal Reserve Bank Note PMG Choice Extremely
The Fr. 789 $5 1915 Atlanta FRBN is an enigmatic scarcity. It has the Teehee-Burke treasury and Pike-McCord bank officer pairing. The original census and Track & Price approximate 100 known survivors. However, the majority recorded are from the first 100-note pack and few public offerings of those notes are cited. The serial number 1 example was sold at Christie's in 1991. Other than the high-grade notes, this Friedberg number is infrequently offered. This example is on the census and is an unusual variant that Mike discovered and enjoyed studying. There are hand-stamped signatures as seen on 1915 notes, but in this case Pike's (seen at left) is in red rather than black. Notably, pointed out on the encapsulation by PMG is: "McCord Signature Handsigned." The signature style on an unusual and difficult-to-encounter Friedberg number makes this a special note. The handling is light and the colors sharp. Underrated due to the scant offerings of this type over the past 25 years.
