We sold this likely unique signed and issued $5000 Loan of 1846 Bond nearly ten years ago, commenting at the time, "We have not seen anything from this 1846 issue during our many years as professional numismatists, and would not be surprised if this bond was unique in private hands. This issued example printed by Rawdon, Wright and Hatch of New York has a large repair on the back, a repaired cancellation hole with tape, plus several other small repairs along the edges. Still more internal holes and edge tears are found on this rare bond that was redeemed in March 1856. The rarity of this item easily outstrips any grade concerns for this possible one-of-a kind bond as Hessler is unable to provide a photo or a description for any denomination of this issue in his reference, An Illustrated History of U.S. Loans 1775 - 1898."
