Hessler UNL Fr. 409-423a $10 Original/Series 1875 Design
National Bank Note Back Specimen PMG Gem Uncirculated 65
EPQ.This Specimen was printed on india paper by the ABNCo and then mounted on cardstock. The vignette is of De Soto Discovering the Mississippi (May 8, 1541) which was used on $10 Original and Series 1875 National Bank Notes. William H. Powell (1823-79) originally painted this romanticized depiction of De Soto's lasting glory. The United States government purchased this painting from Powell in 1855 and was later installed in the Capitol rotunda. The Specimen in this lot has the state seal of New York at left. Hessler mentions this back design as having either the state seal of Missouri or New Jersey. "Specimen" is printed in small type with red ink in three places on our current offering. We have auctioned just two other Proofs and no other Specimens of this design. The latest was a Proof Hessler 497BD with the Missouri state seal as part of the Newman Collection. It graded PCGS 64 and realized $8,225 in April, 2015. In conclusion, tonight's Specimen has both rarity and a well preserved appearance that defies its age.
