Unique Gem Printer's Model of Unadopted Gold Certificate Series

Fr. UNL Hessler GCE2 $50 April 10, 1864 Department-Register's Note Front Printer's Model PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
A unique, gorgeous artist's conception reminiscent of vignettes and designs executed by the ABNCo, even though there is no imprint. This piece is the plate note on page 219 of the second edition of U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes by Gene Hessler. It was intended to win a government contract for an eventual, and ultimately unadopted, issue of notes that could be used to pay customs duties in gold, but could not be bought up by financiers wanting to speculate in gold. This class of notes would not pay interest and would not be assignable. Only the party they were originally issued to could use them to pay customs duties in gold. The vignettes and design elements are printed on India paper and are pasted on to thick cardstock. The vignettes and frame are in black and white with the frame being similar to what is found on $20 1882 Gold Certificates. Two gold shields flank the vignette Constitution, while The Zouave and Sailor vignettes are positioned at left and right respectively. In red ink are the Treasury Seal at upper left and the arbitrary serial number of 57567 at upper right. Pasted down signatures of Chittenden and Spinner round out the description. A stunning example that will become one of the most, if not the most cherished note in any collection that it enters. It will be worth whatever it takes to bring it home.
