Description

$50 National Customs Note Front Design Proof

Fr. 198 Hessler NC2 $50 (1863) National Customs Note Front Design Proof PMG About Uncirculated 55.
A Front Design Proof on bank note paper of a type of paper money that was never actually issued. Since neither the Legal Tender Notes nor the Interest Bearing Notes were acceptable in payment of duties levied by the Federal government, this specialized kind of currency would have filled an obvious gap in the nation's monetary system. The large, bronze "National Customs Note" overprint is bright, and does not have any of the greenish aging so frequently seen on such overprints that were applied to early Federal issues. This plate letter B piece also has four oblong hole punch cancels. This cancellation method is found on almost all of the survivors of this design. It also has edge tears and was previously mounted. The last example that we offered was a plate letter A note in PMG AU 55 that realized $8,400 in November 2020.
