Lovely Proof Fr. 198/198a $50 Interest Bearing Note Pair

Fr. 198/198-198a Hessler X137C (945a)1863 $50 Interest Bearing Note Front and Back Proofs PMG Choice Uncirculated 64; PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
A lovely Proof pair of Friedberg numbers where Fr. 198 is unknown in issued form, while Fr. 198a has only three issued notes recorded. Hessler states on page 67 of U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes that there are seven Proofs known, printed on either cardstock or India paper. This plate letter D Proof was printed by the ABNCo on currency-like paper and mounted on cardstock. It has not been cancelled in any fashion. A vignette of Loyalty holds a sword, while her right hand rests on the Bible and the Constitution. At right, we see a portrait of a dapper Alexander Hamilton. Both front and back examples have been nicely preserved. Only when great collections are sold will material as stunning as this piece surface. (Total: 2 notes)
