This note comes from the family archives of Henry Herrick Bond, who served as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury from 1927 through 1929. As the architect of the changeover from large size to small size currency at the Treasury Department in July of 1929, Bond was presented with this note, which PMG has correctly labeled the "Model" for the Series 1929 National Bank Note issue. It is a card-mounted Proof which displays all of the elements found on issued examples. The charter number 6350 is found on both the left and right sides, but this number, which was issued to the First NB of LeRaysville, Pennsylvania, appears to have been arbitrarily selected, as it does not correspond to the Federal-American NB of Washington, DC title, which used charter number 10316. The note bears eight 0s as its serial number, instead of the six digits used on issued examples.
In an article in the January 2009 issue of Bank Note Reporter, researcher Peter Huntoon discusses the discovery of the $10, $20, $50 and $100 mockups of the Series 1929 small size National Bank Notes in the National Numismatic Collection. This $5 example bears some subtle differences from those pieces. The series designation on each of the higher denominations is 1928, while this $5 note is clearly labeled series of 1929. None of the notes illustrated in the article appear to contain signatures of the Cashier and President, while this piece bears the "signatures" of "John Henry Doe" as Cashier and "William J. Kauffman" as President.
We are aware of no other examples in private hands, making this likely the sole opportunity for any collector to own what is arguably the very first Series 1929 example ever produced. PMG has graded this note as Choice Uncirculated 64 Net, commenting "Foreign Substance, Edge Damage, Toned and noting the Henry Herrick Bond pedigree, all of which are correct but immaterial on a note of this significance."
