$20 Spanish-American War 3% Coupon Bond of 1898 Hessler X188G PMG About Uncirculated 55 EPQ.
An attractive bond that has 38 of its original 80 coupons. This bond is tied with one other example as the highest third party graded Hessler X188G that we have ever auctioned. That earlier offered 55 EPQ garnered a winning bid of $10,506 at our April, 2018 Central States auction. The Loan of 1898 was to provide the ways and means to meet the expenses of the Spanish-American War. Patriotism and cries of "Remember the Maine!" propelled the over subscription of this successful bond issue with the $20 denomination being the smallest and the most affordable for the average citizen. Hessler reports 182 outstanding, but many of those were certainly lost or destroyed over the years. Far fewer of these bonds are available to the collectors of today. Therefore, we expect a performance tonight that will once again crack the five figure barrier.
