$100 United States Loan of 1842 Hessler X106A Choice
New.This piece is the Hessler book, An Illustrated History of U.S. Loans 1775-1898, as rarity 8, or 1-3 known. Like the researchers before us that have cataloged it, we also believe it to be unique. It is printed on India paper and hails from the Vattemare holdings, the single largest source (and in many cases the only source) for the survival of these early government bonds. Though $17 million was authorized for this loan, only $8,343,886.03 was issued, payable twenty and two thirds years from the date of issue at 6% interest. When we offered the $500 from this loan in our FUN Signature Auction just a year ago, it realized nearly $13,000, a price that is easily achievable again this evening.
