Description

Civil War Era US $1,000 Loan Note

$10,000 Temporary Loan of 1862 Face Proof Hessler X-134E PMG About Uncirculated 55.
A beautiful Proof of the Temporary Loan of 1862 authorized by the Act of February 25, 1862. These loans had a 30 day minimum and paid interest at the rate of 5 percent. This Proof is payable in Boston and printed in black with a vivid green overprint. It's card mounted with two punch cancels at the signature blocks. This piece was obtained by our consignor at the 2001 sale of the Herman Halpern collection, and is every bit as pretty today as it was then. The Civil War soldier in Zouave dress on the left side of the note was the work of F.O.C. Darley as engraved by J.I. Pease. A small tear at the POCs is seen.
