Description

Excessively Rare Hawaiian Islands $500 Face and Back Proofs

Hawaiian Islands $500 (1879) Pick 5 Face and Back Proof
These only exist in proof form with a total count of only two sets known. Understandably, they are unpriced in the Krause reference. This set made its numismatic debut at the ABNCo archives auction in 1990, as these notes were produced by the American Bank Note Company for the Kingdom of Hawaii. They are printed on proof paper and mounted on card stock. The registry stub for the face proof has a fold as produced as it extends over the edge of the card stock. There is also some foxing along the bottom edge of the face and the back proof has a small amount of card stock loss at top center. The obligation clause reads, "Five hundred dollars in silver coin payable to the bearer on demand." This is a magnificent proof pair and an irreplaceable treasure that is worth whatever it realizes this evening. Crisp Uncirculated. (Total: 2 notes)
