Possibly Finest Known St. Louis Demand Note

Fr. 5 $5 1861 Demand Note CGA-Very Fine 35. Only nine Fr. 5's are known to exist, and this one, which was from the Harry Bass collection, is very likely the finest of the group. Of the nine in existence, four grade under Very Fine, one is not listed with a grade, and this and three others are graded as Very Fine. This is a lovely piece, with strong signatures, bright colors and unusually good centering for a Demand Note, with margins that are clear of the frame line all the way around, The note's only problem is a somewhat aged upper-left corner tip. This beautiful piece realized just less than $30,000 three years ago, and it will certainly exceed that now, possibly by a wide margin.
