    $5000 Bearer Bond

$5,000 U.S. Treasury Bearer Bond. About New.
Issued August 15, 1978, this bond was due August 15, 2008, though it is still redeemable by the bearer through the Bureau of Public Debt in West Virginia. The interest coupons however are not redeemable past the due date of the bond. Use of bearer bonds in laundering money was the primary reason why they were discontinued in 1986. Bonds issued since the time are made out to individuals and institutions. President James Monroe's portrait is at center with many of the design elements closely tied to regular issue currency, including the bright red seal which was used on Large Size notes prior to 1929.
