Possibly Finest Known $50 Compound Interest Treasury Note

Fr. 192b $50 Compound Interest Treasury Note About Extra Fine. We sold this lovely note once before in January of 1997. At that time, we described it, "Issued under the act of June 30, 1864, this particular example is dated August 15. This is a new note to the census, which now numbers eleven, five of which are permanently impounded. Representing the first opportunity to purchase a $50 Compound Interest Treasury Note in a long time, this piece is the first to appear since 1981 when a Fine sold in the Memphis. This note grades About Extra Fine and has magnificent eye appeal. The bronze, while no longer reflective, has not begun to turn green. The note is particularly well margined, with large borders at the top and both sides, and enough across the bottom. There is a restored area near the right side of the top which is magnificently done, and detectable under only the closest of scrutiny. There are also a number of short edge splits that have been professionally closed and are now visible only when the note is candled. There are only two other possible contenders for finest known: a reported About New in a museum, and an Extra Fine sold by Dean Oakes in 1976. The overall appearance of this extreme rarity is that of a bright, clean, lightly circulated note." Since that time, two others have turned up, and the census now stands at thirteen, but the high end of the grade census remains the same, with this piece still in the running, with the two mentioned above, for possible finest known. The note that Dean sold in 1976 has reappeared and was auctioned by Lyn Knight in December of 1998 for $35,200. We would expect this note to bring about the same. Est. 30,000 up
