Tied for Finest Graded Fr. 192b $50 Compound Interest Treasury Note

Fr. 192b $50 1864 Compound Interest Treasury Note PCGS Very Fine 30.
This is now the third time we have handled this note, most recently at the 2008 FUN auction where it realized $69,000. The last time out, we described the note: "We sold this note once before in May 2002 where we described it as follows: 'Only thirteen examples of this number are known to exist, and only fifteen are known for the type. Of those fifteen, three are permanently impounded in museum or government hands, and two others grade Good or less. This example is extremely well margined, 100% natural, and without a hint of a problem or restoration. The bronze overprint has not darkened in the least, and this beautifully natural note is free of even so much as a pinhole. Only two examples in the census grade Extra Fine or better: one has been off the market for nearly a quarter of a century, and the other is in the ANA museum. In May of 1998, we sold a virtually identical piece to this for $36,300. This piece varies from that only in that the margins are considerably superior, and that makes it the equal of any held in public hands.' Since our last sale of this note, it had been part of the J. Whitney Walter Collection and it is now part of the Peter Gamble Collection. The pedigrees are noted on the PCGS holder." Since that time, the total census has risen to 17. PMG has seen two, a 20 and a 25. PCGS has also graded two, this 30 and one other. With the new entrance in the market for extreme rarities, combined with the remarkable wholesomeness of this note, we would not be surprised to see a six figure realization.
