Fr. 192b $50 1864 Compound Interest Treasury Note CGA Very Fine 35. Only thirteen examples of this number are known to exist, and only fifteen are known for the type. Of those fifteen, three are permanently impounded in museum or government hands, and two others grade Good or less. This example is extremely well margined, 100% natural, and without a hint of a problem or restoration. The bronze overprint has not darkened in the least, and this beautifully natural note is free of even so much as a pinhole. Only two examples that grade as high as Extremely Fine are listed in the census. In May of 1998, we sold a piece virtually identical to this for $36,300. This piece varies from that one only in that the margins are considerably superior, and that makes this piece the second finest of any in public hands, as one of the two Extremely Fine notes is in the ANA museum.
