    Description

Appealing 1864 $20 Compound Interest Treasury Note

Fr. 191a $20 1864 Compound Interest Treasury Note. PCGS Apparent Very Fine 25.
PCGS has noted a minor mounting remnant on the back along with a small edge tear at the bottom, which barely extends past the very ample margin. This note, which is new to the census, has excellent color and terrific eye-appeal. Unlike most Compound Interest Treasury Notes, the overprint has retained its metallic color. Typically this overprint cracks the paper over the years, but there is not a hint of a crack on this nice Very Fine example. The note was authorized under the act of June 30, 1864 and issued on August 15, 1864. Fr. 191a is the most available of the $20 "middle of the book" Interest Bearing and Compound Interest Notes, but most of the notes seen are considerably inferior to this piece, both in technical grade and due to heavy restoration. Middle-of-the-book notes have increased in popularity over the last few years and this is a particularly nice example of a Compound Interest Treasury. Only 56 examples are known in total, and this specimen places well in the top third of the census.
