1880 $20 Silver Certificate, Fr-311, XF. We've sold this beautiful note before in our CAA January 1998 sale where it was described, "Utterly unmolested and with strictly original surfaces, this is a beautiful example of a very scarce type. It's bright, completely clean and with exceptionally broad margins. Notes of this type, particularly in this grade, have almost always suffered the ravages of amateur attempted upgrades. This note has blessedly escaped that fate." At that time, this beautiful note realized $7150 on an estimate of $4000-up. It's a truly stately piece, with sharp printing quality, all its original colors and no circulation soil. It has picked up a number of very light folds that can be seen only under close scrutiny, but in all other respects the note is a Gem. There are over a hundred Fr. 311's known, and fewer than a dozen are graded higher than this note. From the standpoint of eye appeal, this gorgeous piece ranks with the best of them.
