Excessively Rare Signed & Issued $5000 United States Loan of 1846 Bond

1846 $5000 Hessler X111I Interest Bearing Loan Bond PMG Very Fine 30 Net.
This is the second such signed and issued $5000 Interest Bearing Loan of 1846 Bond we have sold, and by far the finer of the two. When we first sold the other example, which was in pieces and reconstructed, grading only "Good," we commented "We have not seen anything from this 1846 issue during our many years as professional numismatists, and would not be surprised if this bond was unique in private hands. This issued example printed by Rawdon, Wright and Hatch of New York has a large repair on the back, a repaired cancellation hole with tape, plus several other small repairs along the edges. Still more internal holes and edge tears are found on this rare bond that was redeemed in March 1856. The rarity of this item easily outstrips any grade concerns for this possible one-of-a kind bond as Hessler is unable to provide a photo or a description for any denomination of this issue in his reference, An Illustrated History of U.S. Loans 1775 - 1898." We sold that bond twice, with the last sale coming a decade after the first, when the bond fetched $5640 despite its less than optimal grade. We now are privileged to offer an incomparably finer example, which came to us from the estate of a long deceased banker with the likely unique signed and issued $1000 5/20 Civil War era bond which is offered below. The lower right corner is missing, and PMG notes a previous mounting, but the paper is bright, the red overprint vivid, and the bond is a joy to look at. Interestingly, it is made payable to J.J. Astor, Jr. of New York, the son of John Jacob Astor, who at the time this bond was issued had become America's first multi-millionaire and was the country's richest single individual.
