Marvelous PMG Graded Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ $100 Gold

Fr. 2405 $100 1928 Gold Certificate. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
Last offered in our memorable Tom Flynn auction, where we catalogued it as follows: "Advanced collectors of small size notes will immediately recognize that this incredible small size $100 Gold Certificate is one of the most important items in Tom Flynn's collection. It is 'sui generis,' a one of a kind item that we have never before seen in your cataloguers' combined eighty years of experience collecting and dealing in currency. We have seen many $100 Golds offered as 'Gem Uncirculated,' but inevitably they have proved to be either 'wannabe' examples or flawed pieces which truly do not deserve even the Choice appellation. This is the first 'real' Gem we have ever laid eyes on, and a note of incredible importance to small size specialists who have waited years for the opportunity to own such an item. In over three years, PMG has graded 137 $100 small size Gold Certificates, grading one Gem 65 and one Gem 66. The new Schwartz and Lindquist catalogue values this type at $6,500 in Choice CU and $25,000 in Gem. The 'Choice' price seems about right if not conservative, and the 'Gem' price a speculation on the authors' part only, as a true Gem, to our knowledge, has never crossed the auction block. It will be interesting, indeed, to see what this spectacular piece realizes today, with our best guess somewhere in the range of $30,000-$50,000." After a protracted bidding war, it closed at the remarkable price of $103,500, a figure that drew audible gasps from the audience. Five years later, there are four $100 Golds that have drawn the 66 grade, two from each of the services, but none have crossed the auction block since late 2008. Our estimate here reflects today's market, but this piece is still every bit as spectacular as it was when we first saw it as we catalogued the Flynn holdings.
