Triple Signature 1882 $100 Gold - Unique in Collector Hands

Fr. 1202a $100 1882 Gold Certificate PCGS Apparent Very Fine 35.
Three examples of this note are known in spite of the Track & Price census of zero. One, a damaged Fair, is in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, examined and graded in 1994. There is an Extra Fine in the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, examined and graded in 1999. The currently offered note was sold by Barney Bluestone as part of the Grinnell Collection on March 10, 1945. This cataloger was not in attendance as he was ten months old and his mother would not let him go. It was later part of the Jim Thompson Collection and most recently was auctioned in December of 1998 as part of the Levitan Collection, where it realized $253,000. Heritage later placed the note privately into the Greensboro Collection accompanied by the 1863 $100 Gold and 1891 Treasury $1000, both of which we sold last April for over $2 million each. This Unique In Collector Hands note is now in a PCGS Apparent Very Fine 35 holder with the Apparent assigned for minor edge restorations. We do not doubt the accuracy of that assessment, but are unable to locate the restoration. This unique, small brown seal, triple signature $100 has the appearance, color, and eye appeal of a high end XF. Although it is unlikely that it will reach seven figures this evening, it is a certainty that it will approach that level.
