Unique Tillman-Morgan Signed 10 Cent Third Issue Red Back - Unseen Since the 1904 Wilcox Sale

Milton 3R10.3 10¢ Third Issue Signed By Tillman and Morgan
This note came to us from the same collection as the unique Fractional multiples. It is listed in Milt Friedberg's 1978 encyclopedia based on a description from an S.H. & H Chapman 1904 sale of the John Wilcox collection, where it was lot 863. That description read, "10¢, autograph signatures of J. Fount Tillman, Register and Daniel N. Morgan, Treasurer, also endorsed by D.N. Morgan, Treasurer, carmine back, unique. Cost, $30.00. Accompanying this are the autograph cards of both Tillman and Morgan. The 3 pcs. are sold as 1 lot." This is the first appearance of this item in 115 years. The Morgan autograph card is still present and has been encased with the Fractional in the PCGS holder. However, the Tillman autograph card has disappeared. Both Tillman and Morgan were Legal signers, giving this unique note the full Legal Tender status. It is the Fractional equivalent of Friedberg 1330, the Red Back Spinner, signed by Allison and New. Allison and New were in office together from June 30, 1875 until January 7, 1876, long after Third Issue notes had ceased to be issued. These notes were clearly not intended as regular issue, but were signed to be given to friends or as some form of a patronage act. In any event, they became Legal Tender once signed. Unlike that note, of which twenty or so examples exist, this note is unique to our best knowledge. And, like the Fr. 1330, this note is deserving of a Friedberg number. It would likely be Fr. 1254a. Had this note surfaced in the 1980s, it would certainly have been a five-figure item. At this date, with far fewer serious and well-healed Fractional collectors, it will still be avidly pursued, but will likely fall short of the five-figure mark. PCGS Choice About New 55.
