    Description

Fr. 135? Milton 3R50.7 50¢ Third Issue Justice About New, Damaged. This is the O'Mara Specimen and it was sold by us once before, when we offered the definitive Friedberg Collection in January of 1997. It was described there, "This enigmatic note was always considered by Milt to be the most significant Regular Issue note in his collection. It traces its history back to the S.H.&H. Chapman February 15, 1904 sale of the Wilcox Collection where it was lot # 906. It was described there, '50¢ parchment fibre (sic) paper, autographed signatures of Allison-Spinner, rev. S-2-6-4, carmine back. Water has seriously damaged the signature of John Allison, making it blurred and staining the note around it, exceedingly rare.' At the time the Encyclopedia was printed, this note was known to Milt and had been examined by him, but he was not successful in acquiring it until the early 1980's. The signature is seriously blurred, but it clearly appears to be that of John Allison. Should the note prove genuine, as Milt is sure it is, it indeed would be the most significant regular-issue Fractional note. Other experts, including Martin Gengerke, are of the opinion the note is a pre-1904 forgery. It's possible that both Milt's and Martin's opinion are somewhat colored by ownership. Milt owns it; Martin doesn't. This cataloger, lacking the ability to obtain physical evidence to either verify or refute its authenticity, is honestly unable to offer a meaningful opinion." Everything stated above remains true today, except for its ownership; it now belongs to the person who acquired it at the Tom O'Mara Sale. Tom thought enough of it to buy it for a four-figure price. As with its last auction appearance, CAA cannot guarantee the authenticity of this note, and will not accept returns. Offered without estimate.
