    Description

Fr. 1272SP 15¢ Third Issue Narrow Margin Face PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ.
Generals Grant and Sherman are depicted on this Third Issue specimen. It was the only note affected by the Act of April 7, 1866 which forbade the likeness of any living person to appear on any note "heretofore engraved." Since the Fessenden notes were in production at the time, it did not apply to them, but the Grant/Sherman notes only existed in uniface for possible inclusion on shields so they could not be printed as regular issue notes. No traces of mounting on a shield exist on this note which has strong, dark printing and bright paper.
