Fr. 1236 5c Third Issue PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ. These Third Issue 5¢ notes were printed at the end of the war from about January 1865 until April 1866. This example is the red back variety. The green back variety is being offered as a separate lot in this auction. Explorer William Clark's portrait was to have been used for these notes. Spencer Clark, the appointed head of the Currency Bureau, decided to include his own portrait instead. His controversial action led to a law banning the use of portraits of living persons on any U.S. Currency. That law remains in effect.
