Extremely Rare No-Denomination Yellow Paper Progress Proof

Similar to Milton 2E5F.2e Second Issue Yellow Paper Progress Proof PCGS Superb Gem New 67PPQ.
Milton 2E5F.2e would be the closest number for this beautiful high grade Progress Proof. It is very similar to lot 16377 of the Tom O'Mara sale. That piece has previously been lot 890 from our January 1997 sale of the Milt Friedberg Collection. This piece lacks the pasted-on Washington portrait, and is canceled with three pie-wedge-shaped holes rather than the normal half-moon cancels. A wonderful example with the additional benefit of a very high third party grade - something that few Progress Proofs will ever obtain, as most are handled, glue stained, or otherwise impaired. It is on a lemon-yellow card stock in this instance. This is one of the earliest progress proofs of the Second Issue, bearing the earlier act date of July 17, 1862 and lacking many elements of the finished plate. This is also part of a very short series of proofs that had the words "Engraved and Printed at the Treasury Department" printed outside the boundary of the note in a separate block rather than in its final position below the enabling date. This is the highest third-party grade we've seen for any Fractional developmental piece.
