Milton 2E50R.5a 50¢ Second Issue Experimental Back PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
This Milton number is almost always damaged and has muddy printing. This note is the antithesis, as the printing is only slightly muddy and no damage is found whatsoever. It has a fully printed, bright red back with full bronzing including corner surcharges "T-1-18-63" and the "50" denomination numeral. It has the two half-moon punch cancels, and the back also has the blue SPECIMEN, but the face only has the bronze ring and no ink engraving. It is printed on fiber paper and listed as an R-7 with less than ten examples known today. In the 1903 Friedman sale, one of this number was described as being "from a closely lined plate and so badly printed as to appear solid."
