    Scarce "0" and "63" Surcharge Fractional

    Fr. 1248 10¢ Second Issue PCGS Apparent Extremely Fine 45.
    Only about two dozen or so examples of this Friedberg number are known. They always attract considerable attention when one appears at auction. The surcharges are in the normal, plain font. Milt Friedberg traced the earliest appearance of an "O-63" note back to the Harlan P. Smith sale of the R.C. Davis Collection on January 20, 1890. Smith has long been suspected of "manufacturing" the Fr. 1310a notes. Consequently, some suspicion must fall on him for the possibility of also having created these Fr. 1248 examples. All but one of the known Fr. 1248 notes have this very plain "O-63" surcharge. The one exception has more ornate surcharges, and is likely the only Bureau-produced Fr. 1248. In any event, these notes have always been considered part of a fractional set. PCGS notes small rust stains on the back. These are truly small and confined to the back upper right corner. After a long hiatus, this same note returns to us after we sold it for $948.75 in our 2003 Central States sale. That figure should easily be eclipsed in today's robust market.
