    Description

10¢ Second Issue Experimental Milton 2E10F.4d PCGS Choice New 63.
This rare and intriguing Experimental is unpunched and unstencilled. The face is identical to the regular issue Fr. 1249 and the back is entirely blank, lacking bronze and engraving. This is the variety with two distinct bronze ovals around Washington's portrait. This is not simply a heavily printed oval. It is two ovals that have been placed on the note at separate times. The ovals are offset by 1 1/2 millimeters in height and 2 millimeters in width. We have sold this variety twice before, initially in January 1997 as part of the Milt Friedberg Collection where it was lot 940 and again in May of 2005 in the Tom O'Mara auction. Both of those examples were the same note, though Tom was not the purchaser in Milt's sale. This is a new piece identical in grade but brighter and better margined. An intriguing anomaly suitable for additional research as the purpose of the double oval has never been explained.
