Description

Second Issue Progress Proof PCGS Apparent Choice New 63.
This note is ex-Friedberg 1/97 and ex-O'Mara 5/05 where it was lot 16377. It was described in O'Mara "When Superior offered this note as lot 44 of the Fraser Collection in 1982, it was listed as 2E5F.2e. However, that number lacks the portrait. This, with the portrait pasted on, is correctly 2E5F.2h. It was item #54 of Ed Frossard's October 1893 listing, asterisked there as being unique to the Clark Collection. This is one of the earliest progress proofs of the Second Issue, bearing the earlier act date of July 17, 1862 and lacking many elements of the finished plate. This is also part of a very short series of proofs that had the words 'Engraved and Printed at the Treasury Department' printed outside the boundary of the note in a separate block rather than in its final position below the enabling date. The top of the note has a pencil notation, 'Conditions B-Dec 27.' Tom acquired this note as lot 890 from our Friedberg sale in January of 1997. It was estimated there at $2,500 and realized $2,420. Eight years later, in a much more sophisticated market environment, this piece should double that." The market for these special notes is lower now than it was years ago, quite possibly making this an ideal time to acquire ultra-rare Fractional progress proofs.
