Fr. 1317 Milton 2R50.3d 50¢ Second Issue Inverted Back Engraving New. Although listed in the Encyclopedia at the time of its publication in 1978, no examples had been definitively traced. As a group, Second Issue notes with the back engraving inverted are more rare than those with inverted surcharges. About 20 engraving inverts are known, as opposed to about 60 surcharge inverts for all Second Issue notes. The note is fully uncirculated, with the margins and printing quality of an absolute Gem, but the corners of the face are quite aged, apparently from mounting, and there is a sand hole the size of a pinhole near the bottom left corner. These holes, which are seen occasionally on all issues of Nineteenth Century paper money, are manufacturing defects rather than circulation damage. A small piece of grit (sand, stone, newt eyeball, or whatever) is manufactured into the paper. When it falls out, which generally occurs from the pressure of the printing plate, it leaves a small hole. Don Kelly October 1993, CAA MRF 1/97, then to Tom O'Mara.
