Description

"CSA" Watermarked Paper - Full Sheet.
On April 27, 1862 the Confederate blockade runner Bermuda was captured by the USS Mercedita and taken to Philadelphia. The Bermuda's cargo, which included a shipment of banknote paper bound for the Confederate States of America, was ordered sold by the Federal Courts. The Treasury Department purchased most of the "CSA" watermarked banknote paper and used it for a number of purposes, including Fractional Currency Specimens of the Second and Third Issues. This is an example of a seldom seen full sheet that has eight "CSA" watermarks. It has been two years since we last offered a full sheet and that example brought $1035. Many of these sheets have been cut over the 150 intervening years. This sheet is not graded. It has a center fold which is a common characteristic of all known full sheet examples and approximate 3.5 and 4.25 inch splits at center. Overall, the sheet measures approximately 13 by 16 inches.
