Lovely Green Fractional ShieldFractional Currency Shield, With Green Background.
Conventional wisdom asserts that there are only about a dozen Green Shields in existence and we have personally examined most of them. This is among the very finest that we have handled, with the Milt Friedberg example, which we sold in January 1997 being the finest. The green background color on this Shield is very nice, with all of the fine design elements clear and intact. The eagle and stars at the top of the Shield are bright green without the slightest hint of fading. The great majority of the notes are nearly fully bright, with the exception being the 25¢ Second Issue back, which is always faded on Shields. The Shield has very little of the normally seen water staining at the bottom, which has not impacted any of the notes to any degree. All of the other notes are pristine and bright. All four hand signed notes are the Colby-Spinner varieties, including the Grant-Sherman as these Fr. 1273SPs were found only on pink and green shields. The mat is still bright. There is a minor scuff at top left and some light retouching is visible, but overall this is a wonderful shield. It is in a period frame with a gold border.
