Fractional Currency Shield, With Gray Background.
This is a far nicer than average Gray Shield, with the gray background boldly printed and intact with no scuffs or tears. All of the notes are bright except for the always-faded 25¢ Second Issue back. The four hand-signed notes, the 50¢ Justice and Spinner, the 15¢ Grant-Sherman and the 10¢ are all of the Jeffries-Spinner signature combination. There is only a very small amount of water damage that is normally found on shields due to their storage in the BEP basement and a resultant flood. The Shield is housed in a dark wood frame with gold interior edge but is not of BEP issue, as the shields were always stored and shipped to the banks flat. There is a card inside the frame that says, "Compiled and Arranged in Baltimore During the Civil War by Lyman Fulton - Great Uncle of James Arthur Fulton of the Melrose Co-operative Bank." This information is obviously incorrect, as all shields were assembled by the BEP, but Mr. Fulton may have been the one who placed it in the frame.
