DescriptionFractional Currency Shield with Gray Background. Very Fine-Extremely Fine.
This shield has a nice gray background although the mounting paper is beginning to tone. All 39 notes are bright except for the 25¢ Second Issue back, that almost always has faded to light blue. The four hand-signed notes are all Jeffries-Spinner combinations; the Justice and Spinner 50¢ notes, the Grant-Sherman 15¢, and the Washington 10¢. The bronzing on most of the Second and Third Issue notes is bright, almost reflective. The 5¢ Second Issue back has the top left corner folded and there is an approximately 6mm tear in the top center margin of the 15¢ Grant-Sherman Fr. 1272 note that disrupts the very top of the design. There is a small stain in the left middle margin that goes into the gray area, but is minimally disruptive. There is minimal water staining when compared to other shields and is limited to the bottom, not entering the gray area. The water stains are the result of damage that occurred while they were in storage at the BEP before being shipped off to banks. All fractional shields were shipped flat, so any frame a shield is in is not original to the BEP and this one is no exception.
