Description

Fr. 1382 Fractional Currency Shield, With Gray Background.
The frame, often referred to as original, is contemporary to the period of the shield, but in fact the shields were distributed unframed. This particular frame also has just over 50% the original wood back made of thin, wide boards. Many pieces of the frame's coating are missing on the front. The appearance of the shield would be significantly enhanced if it were housed in a different frame. A few small areas of damage are seen near the stars, however they pose minimal distraction. Three of the four hand-signed notes are Colby-Spinner, and the Grant-Sherman has the Jeffries-Spinner signature combination. Many of the notes remain bright, although a number of them display aging. The 25ยข Second Issue back, as always, is the most light-struck, having turned blue-green from its original purple. Areas of water staining are observed, primarily outside of the shield design. Tears are seen at the left and right, but they are well within the border. In spite of its problems, this shield has a nice overall appearance.
