Fr. 1382 Fractional Currency Shield, With Gray Background.
About mid range for quality with a strong gray color and a very nice eagle and stars at the top. Most of the notes have mild foxing and/or mold and/or glue stains, but with the exception of the 25¢ Second Issue back as always, all of the other notes have retained nearly full original color. All four hand signed notes are Jeffries-Spinner examples which is typical for gray shields. This Shield is 100% complete, fully wide out to its original edges and unlike most it apparently was not present for the flood as it is not water stained. The only notes with meaningful damage are the dark curtain 3¢ face; the 10¢ First Issue face, both of which have insect damage; and the Grant-Sherman green back which appears to have had a piece missing when originally mounted. Professional restoration would help considerably, but would really not be cost-effective. As it lays, its historical value more than makes up for its physical defects and it's certainly attractive enough to be hung as is. It's in a contemporary 1860s frame with its original wood plank backing.
