Description

Fr. 1382 Fractional Currency Shield, With Gray Background Fine.
This is a gray Fractional Currency Shield in a plain dark non-contemporary wood frame with cardboard and paper backing. The shield itself is covered at its outer edge by a custom mat nicely cut to the edges of the engraving. Whether or not the areas under the mat are water stained, we cannot tell, but the fifty-cent Spinner note is missing its top right corner which is almost covered by the mat. The original shield has been folded at least two times and there are two vertical tears at the bottom of the gray mat. None of the folds or tears affects the notes to any major extent. Some of the notes have folded or missing corners and the 25¢ Second Issue back, as always, has turned blue-green from its original purple due to light exposure. Three of the four handsigned notes are Jeffries-Spinner varieties and the Ten Cent Third Issue is a Colby-Spinner. Shields with flaws remain desirable as there are relatively few survivors of the estimated 4500 or more examples that were produced. The Treasury Department did not receive the number of orders they had anticipated and many of the shields sat in storage for an extended period of time where many sustained water damage. Additionally, early collectors purchased the shields in order to remove some of the scarcer notes, further reducing the surviving population.
