    Intriguingly Inscribed Fr. 1248

Fr. 1248 10¢ Second Issue With Contemporary Inscription PCGS Extremely Fine 45.
Taken in at a glance, this is just another example of the rare Fr. 1248. On closer inspection, a contemporary inscription is noticed around the edges of the back of the note. A little background... Most serious Fractional Currency authorities over the last 50 years have considered the strong likelihood that these O-63 Surcharged Second Issue 10 Cent notes were manufactured for the collector market in the 1880s. Milt Friedberg had traced the earliest appearance of an O-63 note back to the Harlan P. Smith sale of the R. C. Davis Collection on January 20, 1890. Davis has long been suspected of "manufacturing" the small perforation Friedberg 1310a's and suspicion has fallen on him for the possibility of also having created Fr. 1248s. All but one of the known Fr. 1248s have the very plain "O-63" surcharge. The one exception has a far more ornate Old English "O" as is seen in the other surcharges of the series. That note is considered to be from the only Bureau-produced sheet of Fr. 1248s. The inscription on this note is clearly not a modern concoction as anyone with a good familiarity of nineteenth century inks and handwriting can readily see. Although quite light, it can be deciphered, and it reads, "To Belle From Uncle Orville July 1st 1865" dating this O-63 note right in the middle of the second issue print dates of October 10th, 1863 to February 23rd, 1867. Does this add value? Probably not, but it is an unbelievably intriguing item for serious Fractional Currency specialists to examine and debate (which Fractional specialists are wont to do) far into the future.
