Likely Unique Fr. 1311 Block of Eight

Fr. 1311 50¢ First Issue Block of Eight PCGS Choice About New 55PPQ.
There are three vertical strips of four known of this Friedberg number and, while the centering matches up, there is no way to tell if they all originated from a single sheet. It certainly seems to be a likelihood. In any event, this is the largest known block of Friedberg 1311s. PCGS has graded it 55PPQ, as it was folded between all subjects and also has two light horizontal folds that fall within the design. The perforations are excellent all around, though the bottom two notes have one straight edge. The notes are fully bright and each of the eight would be quite valuable by itself. The four AUs would be worth about $1,200 and the four Choice New another $2,500. Frederick Mayer owned two of the 1311 strips, the O'Mara example and the Friedberg example. In 2007, those strips realized $4,312.50 and $7,475. At that time, this block would certainly have been a $15,000 item. It is no less important now, but there are fewer collectors pursuing ultra-rare Fractional items. We would guess that this block will hammer right around five figures.
