Description

50c Fifth Issue Tete-Beche Horizontal Back Pair. This 50c tete-beche pair from the Hoffman Collection is far rarer than the 10c or 25c pairs that appear above. Each of those pairs is one of seven known. This 50c pair is one of only two that we know of. The Milt Friedberg Collection, which had blocks of four of the 10c and 25c notes, plus an additional single of each, lacked even a single of this 50c. It's been dismounted from its backing so that only the India-paper pair is present. It's truly a proof printing, with the razor sharp detail that is never found on regular-issue notes. It has a repaired short split at the bottom center and a few very minor edge problems, but it gives the appearance of a perfect Gem pair. Excessively rare and difficult to estimate.
