    Description

10c Fifth Issue Tete-Beche Pair Gem New. Only seven tete-beche 10c Fifth Issue pairs exist, all of which trace their origins to a single sheet which was discovered in 1985. The sheet was cut and divided among the major collectors of the day, and this, to our knowledge, is the equal of the best and better than most. The notes are true proofs, with ink laid on so heavily and sharply that the design elements can be felt with one's fingers. This tete-beche arrangement was created so that the localized anticounterfeiting stain could be produced in the center of the sheet and still appear at the proper end of each note when the notes were separated. A rare and lovely item.
